What I Read Today…

Daily Bible Reading for March 28, 2020.

Today my Bible reading plan covers Joshua, chapters 19-21.

In Chapter 19, Joshua continues the allotment of land for the remaining tribes. The second lot cast fell to Simeon, whose land would be in the middle of Judah’s inheritance since his allotment was too large. Following Simeon was Zebulun, then Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan received the seventh lot. All allotments either described by boundaries and/or cities obtained. By command of God, the Israelites gave Joshua the city that he requested. This completed the allotment of the inheritance of land.

In Chapter 20, the LORD reminds Joshua that the Israelites must appoint out of their inheritance cities of refuge for the Israelites or those who are sojourners that happen to kill a person without intent. So they designated three cities on the east of the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, as instructed through Moses.

“You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge. These six cities shall be for refuge for the people of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, that anyone who kills any person without intent may flee there.” Numbers 35:14-15

In Chapter 21, the heads of the Levites approach Joshua and Eleazar the priest to remind them that God commanded through Moses that they were to be given cities to dwell in because they had no inheritance but God.  So each tribe designated cities that included the cities of refuge out of their inheritance for the Levites according to their clans.  The Lord fulfilled his promise and gave them the land.

“Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers.  Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.” Vss. 43-45

My Thoughts On This: God is faithful to his word. This reading reminds me of a couple of scriptures about the confidence we can have in the word of God:

“For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18 KJV

“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”  2 Corinthians 1:20 KJV

In order to claim the promises of God, we must know them, and to know them, we must read the book.

Let’s read the Book!
