Promises We Can Believe

Promises,  promises. We’ve all made them. We all break them. I believe that this is why Jesus warns:

Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn. 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say simply be ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. Matthew 5:33-37 ESV

We may mean well when we make promises, but we can never anticipate what might happen that would deter one from making good on the promise. This is one reason that wise parents are careful not to make promises to their children.

But there are promises that we can believe, and trust, and they are those promised by God. One of the very first promises from God was of our redemption through a Savior, after Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God’s command to refrain from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He said to the serpent who beguiled them:

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15 KJV

In this scripture, Christ was promised as the sinners’ Savior from their bondage to sin and reconciliation to God.

Here are more sweet promises that we can believe.

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 ESV

…for he that said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5b KJV

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 KJV

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. I Corinthians 10:13 ESV

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4 ESV

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. II Corinthians 1:20 ESV

These are just a few of the promises that we can remind ourselves as we go through this journey called life.

  1. This phone is tripping or maybe it’s my fingers. But, I was listening to the words of promise being spoken and really saw that we truly cannot promise what we don’t have control over. We don’t have control over much. The only promises that can truly hold true are those from God. Appreciate the post.
