Yes, the Bee Gees’ How Deep Is Your Love is what came to mind as I thought about the parable Jesus spoke about the sower and the soils.
“…Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4 And wen he sowed, some of the seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them. 5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth; and forthwith they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth. 6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away, 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up, and choked them. 8 But other seeds fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matthew 13:3b-9 KJV
Alot of us claim to love God, but as we see in the parable above, only one soil brought forth fruit. The last line of each verse in the song is: “And it’s me you need to show.”
There must be fruit or proof of our love. Jesus explains the soil without root :
“But he that received the seed in stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and immediately with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hat he not root in himself, but |endureth| for a while; for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, immediately he is offended.” Matthew 13:20 KJV
Our love for Jesus, cannot merely be infatuation; it must be rooted in obedience to him. Jesus says that we prove our love by being obedient.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15 ESV
