Prayer is how we express our adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplications to God our Father. Prayer is sharing our deepest thoughts with God. Prayer is asking for his guidance and help through life’s circumstances.

As Christians, we are expected to pray. Prayer is the means God has given for us to maintain our connection to him. Luke 18:1 says that men should always pray and not faint.  Does God Answer Prayer? Yes he does.

My prayer life has not always been consistent, but these last few years, it has become a daily part of my life. For me, prayer is ensuring God has me, is looking out for me. I once described it as a kid playing and looking back to make sure their parent was still watching them. That’s what it is to me. I need our Creator and Sustainer God desperately. I really could not function without him.

It is true, in him I live and move and have my being. Acts 17:28

He is my Father, so there is absolutely nothing that I cannot tell him. I cannot keep secrets from him. He knows all my secrets, even before I tell him. I am so indebted to him, and sometimes when I think of how much, like now, it still overwhelms me. Yes, overwhelms me to tears.

I am eternally grateful that he gave us prayer. I am grateful that Jesus Christ prayed and is still praying for us. Jesus, though God, still prayed to God the Father when he dwelt among men, and were subject to all things like we are. He prayed.

I understand that the Puritans used to say: “pray until you pray”. What does that mean? It means to stay on your knees praying until you know that you’ve reached God, or do you not realize to whom you are praying?

When I pray, I am praying to the Sovereign God over all things, who created the heaven and the earth, who spoke light into being, who keeps the ocean waters from overflowing the earth, who hung the sun to give light and heat, who feeds the birds, who knows how many hairs I have on my head. That’s who I am praying to.

He is the Almighty Warrior God, who delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt with wonders, might, and power, and though, they failed him, when they cried for mercy, his mercy abounded in their favor.

Praying keeps me humble. Praying keeps me connected, and gives me a certain awareness that absolutely everything happens, happens under his watchful eye, and that helps me to live a life worthy of the call; though, I often fail. But even then, I can immediately go to him and confess that I blew it, I didn’t honor him, and he continues to count me as righteous because of his Son, Jesus.

Jesus’ disciples after having seen Jesus many times stealing away from the crowd to pray, they asked him to teach them. This is the model Jesus gave his disciples, however, his longest recorded prayer is in John 17.

“…Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:9-13 KJV
