Daily Bible Reading for March 21, 2020
Today my Bible reading plan covers chapters 30 and 31 of Deuteronomy.
In Chapter 30, Moses prophetically sees that the Israelites will not keep their end of the covenant to obey God, and will experience the blessing and the curse, but when they repent and turn, then God will restore their fortunes, return them to the land that their fathers once possessed and have mercy on them.
“And the LORD our God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and that you may live.” Deuteronomy 30:6
Moses gave them a choice between life and death.
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life….”Deuteronomy 30:19
In Chapter 31, Moses lets the Israelites know that he’s about to die and won’t cross over with them. He lets them know that Joshua will be their next leader and that God will be with them as they take possession of the land. Moses writes all the laws down and gives to the priests to be read to the Israelites every seven years.
Because God knows that they will break the covenant, he will forsake them. He tells Moses to write a song and teach it to them, and their children will remember it.
“For I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give.” Deuteronomy 31:21b
God is a God of mercy, forgiveness, compassion, and wisdom. He is sovereign. He knows that the Israelites will not keep his covenant, so in his wisdom, he gives them a song to sing. Songs are memorable. We sing songs sometimes without thinking about the words, but God is using this song as a testimony against them. But one day, he will forgive.
God will circumcise the hearts of his own.
Let’s read the Book!
