Would knowing that, how you parent your children is not for your children but for God, or how you love your spouse is not for your spouse but for God, or how do your job is not for your employer but for God, change anything? Would you parent, love or work differently knowing that you were doing it for God?

The words “consider what you do” spoke powerfully to me this past Saturday as I was reading during my Bible time.

“Consider what you do, for you judge not for man but for the Lord. He is with you in giving judgment. 7 Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you….” II Chronicles 19:6b-7a ESV

King Jehoshaphat uttered these words in an effort to have the people return to the Lord, to restore the fear of the Great God who had been gracious to them.

As a Christian, although I still fall short, that was a great reminder to me. Knowing that everything we do is for God should drive how we do what we do. Unfortunately, we have so many distractions we sometimes forget and don’t always do it as if we are doing it for God, but that doesn’t remove the obligation. Everything we do is for God. Even my blogging, it’s for God.

This reminds me of a book I read sometime ago The Practice of the Presence of God which is the account of a 17th century monk named Bro. Lawrence who practiced the presence of God and did everything for the love of God. Says Bro. Lawrence:

“We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.”

Bro. Lawrence did everything for the love of God, whether he was on duty to wash dishes or going to market to buy the groceries. He did those menial tasks for the Lord, because he loved God. He once said:

“It is enough for me to pick up but a straw from the ground for the love of God.”

I have read that little book about three times because it challenges me, reminds me that everything I do is for the Lord. Whether I do it with God in mind, or not, God will settle  later. I Corinthians 3:13-15

It appears that Bro. Lawrence was well acquainted with the scripture in which the Apostle Paul encourages believers in the same way.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 ESV

So, may this serve as a reminder, a challenge to consider to do all we do for the Lord, for the love of God. There is no task nor deed too small.
